Beneath the Silhouette: Historical Undergarment Structures in French Costume - 20hours ( 8 classes) Class 1 – Introduction to Historical Silhouettes • Overview of fashion silhouettes from the 17th to early 20th centuries in France • Evolution of body shapes and their cultural context • Introduction to key support garments: pannier, crinoline, tournure (bustle) • Discussion of materials, techniques, and social symbolism • Students start the design process of the undergarment. Class 2 – In-Depth Focus on Selected Structures, Pattern Exploration and measurements (2 hours) • Deep dive into each structure type (based on student choices) • Taking measurement for undergarment. • Methodology drafting a pattern for undergarments • Choosing appropriate material ( steel bones, tape, padding, …) • Analyze how the chosen undergarments affects posture, walking, and volume Class 3 - Structure Making Part I • Cutting and shaping steel bones • Cutting and preparing cotton tape Class 4 – Structure Making Part II • Continue construction: prepare for first fitting • Fitting mock-ups • Evaluate shape vs. chosen silhouette reference Class 5, 6 and 7- Finalise Structure Base • Adjustment after fitting • Finishing edges, closures, waist supports • Reinforce movement/stability • Add detachable elements if relevant (e.g. folding panniers, layered bustles) • Document progress (photos) Class 8 - How historical understructures inspire modern costume and fashion design • Study how fashion and costume design get inspired by undergarments and use historical techniques to create contemporary silhouette • How can techniques like boning, padding, cage structures, or folding panels be applied to current stage design?
